Isabelle Gruson, a lace-making instructor, and participants in the museum’s hand-lace workshops are hard at work: a wonderful opportunity to watch bobbin and needle lace being made and to chat with the artisans. Sunday, September 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Free demonstration, part of Heritage Weekend—not to be confused with the paid workshop on October 8, which requires registration.

"Hand-Made Lace" Workshop with Isabelle Gruson

Isabelle Gruson, a certified lace-making instructor from the Kantcentrum in Bruges, guides participants through introductory or advanced classes—using both needle and bobbins—based on a suggested pattern or a pattern of their choice. Choose from two time slots: 10 a.m.–1 p.m. and 2 p.m.–5 p.m. Price: €7 for a half-day, €10 for a full day. Ages 16 and up. Registration required. The Cité de la dentelle et de la mode is open every day except Tuesday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

A Lace Factory in the Age of Steam: A Virtual Reality Experience

Visitors can put on a virtual reality headset to explore the now-demolished boiler room of the former Boulart factory, which has been turned into a museum. It’s a new way to understand how steam power operated the machine tools used to manufacture machine-made lace. Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Free admission.
